Training your dog not to be afraid of the vet or groomer

It is inevitable that dogs will need to visit veterinary clinics for medical care or grooming salons for beauty treatments.

However, for a dog, the experience of being handled by strangers using various instruments—and being placed on an examination or grooming table while being prodded and poked—can be truly terrifying.

So, how can you help your dog overcome its fear of veterinarians and groomers?

Start by setting up a table or desk at home to simulate an examination or grooming table. Ask a few friends to play the roles of the veterinarian or groomer.

Have your friends enter the room, then gently lift your dog onto the table and give it some time to adjust to the height. Ensure the table surface isn't too slippery; slipping can heighten a dog's anxiety. Also, if it is winter and the surface feels cold, place a small mat or cloth down to minimize discomfort.

Have your friends gather around and pretend to perform an examination. Throughout this process, you should continuously stroke and comfort your dog to help it feel secure, and offer treats as rewards.

Practice frequently to help your dog gradually adapt until it can remain calm on the table while people handle its ears, eyes, mouth, paws, and hindquarters. If your dog shows signs of fear (such as lip-licking, pawing, gaping, or panting), help soothe and calm it; if it accepts the examination quietly, allow your friends to give it treats as a reward. Note: Once your dog has adapted to the routine at home, try to practice with different people in various locations. The best results are achieved when the dog is comfortable being handled in any setting.
